NOTICINGS: Parallel polis
Finding our footing on the balance beam of private life and government power.
Why did I start writing Noticings? The morning after the election of Donald J. Trump, I woke with one chilling thought: we are all now about to live under ever-shifting brutal lawlessness. That thought was confined to our country. No longer.
Noticings has become an effort to understand how to balance private life and the government’s power. I’m not alone. The No Kings rallies represent how many of us—millions—want our constitutional rights honored. We are doing what we can to stop the petty tyrannies whose influence is ever-growing and ever-darker. Professor of Political Science at Columbia University notes that “Trump governs today in the wake of the near-complete dismantling of checks and balances on the executive branch, at least in the foreign policy and national security realm.”
The upcoming Reconciliation Bill 2025 is on a fast track for the President’s signature on July 4. If passed in its current form, the results will devastate people’s lives and our natural resources.
In the next 13 days, what more can we do to compel TACO Man to make some changes in the Reconciliation Bill? He changed/changes his mind about tariffs. Same changes about bombing Iran. What else can we do to minimize the damage? I have no idea.
I’m going to take a long hike on the mountain. Maybe something useful will come to mind. Maybe figure out a way to jump through the hoop.
